Singh, S. Sankaran, V. Mander, H. Worah, S. 2000. Strengthening Conservation Cultures: Local Communities and Biodiversity Conservation. Man and the Biosphere Programme, UNESCO, Paris, France.

This study, sponsored by UNESCO, is an attempt to understand some of the initiatives that work well to promote local participation in biodiversity conservation. It also aims to abstract from these initiatives, the general principles that make decentralised and participatory conservation strategies effective and sustainable. The paper describes the history and critical components of community participation in biodiversity conservation, such as incentives, motivations and community structure. Twenty seven case studies are presented, although none are from the Pacific Islands.
