U.S. Department of State - Pacific Regional Environmental Office
Because many of today’s environmental problems can best be addressed through regional cooperation, the Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs established 12 regional environmental offices (REOs). One of these, the Pacific Regional Environmental Office, is located in the U.S. Embassy in Suva, Fiji. This office tracks environmental developments in 16 Pacific island countries and territories, and works with Pacific governments, regional intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental actors to strengthen and expand U.S. engagement with Pacific island countries in efforts that respond to the major environmental challenges facing the region.
The Pacific REO’s particular focal areas are;
- Climate Change Adaptation
- Biodiversity Protection
- Oceanic Fisheries Management
Apart from the environment, the REO also helps support U.S. activities in science, technology and health in the region.
