This document contains the summary process and results from a workshop completed in 1999 by project representatives from three community-based marine biodiversity conservation projects in Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and Fiji. The goal of the workshop was to provide informed guidance for conservation practitioners in the Indo-Pacific to use in community-based marine biodiversity conservation efforts.
The report is divided into five main sections. Four of these sections cover different factors that affect the success of community-based resource management with guiding principles that were identified. These are: enterprise factors, community factors, natural resource factors and organizational factors. The report culminates in group conclusions on the need for respect for community, true and sustained leadership, improved teamwork and networking, positive stakeholder relationships, and communication and integration of enterprise and conservation efforts.
