In Tahiti, around fifteen representatives of the State, the Country, but also of organizations such as Ifrecor went into the water at 6:45 this Saturday morning to observe the synchronized spawning of corals. The objective was to collect data from observers spread all around the island, but also around the world to determine how far this synchronization goes.
You have certainly already observed this phenomenon without knowing it. “With the naked eye, you really see smoke coming out of the coral, like a kind of big cloud, so it is really visible ,” explains Vetea Liao, marine biologist and co-founder of the association Tama no te Tairoto, which organized a participatory science event this Saturday around the observation of synchronized spawning of Porites rus corals. A delegation of officials representing the authorities of the State, the Country, but also of organizations such as the French Initiative for Coral Reefs (Ifrecor) or the French Biodiversity Organization (OFB) went into the water at 6:45 this Saturday morning in the Punaauia lagoon to witness this phenomenon. “The objective was to show them the coral spawning on colonies that are not very far from the shore, about a meter deep. They saw a very small one at 7:20 but we don't know this site well, it was the first time we came ,” explained Vetea Liao who is on all fronts.
