Micronesia Challenge

You are here

The Micronesia Challenge (MC) is a commitment by the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands to sustainably manage the natural resources that are crucial to the survival of Pacific traditions, cultures and livelihoods. The overall goal of the MC is to effectively conserve at least 30% of the near-shore marine resources and 20% of the terrestrial resources across Micronesia by 2020.

Each jurisdiction is working towards the establishment of scientifically designed protected areas networks and implementing other supportive conservation strategies, and together they share knowledge through regional learning networks such as the Pacific Islands Managed and Protected Areas Community (http://pimpac.org/). Each of the jurisdictions has developed sustainable finance plans to support their conservation work, and the Micronesia Conservation Trust manages the MC endowment. The MC also has a strong education and outreach component.
