An agreement has been signed on Santo to use 1,300 square kilometres of land on West Coast area for logging exports over a period of 99 years. But the government is not certain about the legalities of this agreement and there is already unease from Santo residents.
Under the agreement, the Torboa Area Council of Chiefs will provide all trees for free of charge, local labor, accommodation and meals for all employees and a temporary dock for export and transportation needs. Vanuatu Forest Industry Limited will supply equipment for road construction, logging and agricultural purposes to support the project and will provide only 10% of net profits to Torboa Area Council of Chief as revenue share at the end of each fiscal year.
