During the months of October and November, the population of Bora Bora was invited to express their opinion on the establishment of a full nature reserve in the southern area of Matira Point.
This is a project that has been under study for several years: a rāhui area is about to be installed in the Matira lagoon. The public inquiry was conducted for a month from October 15 to November 15. Preserve resources to ensure their future. This is the objective of the proposal to establish a rāhui, launched two years ago by the Ia Vai Ma noa Bora Bora association and the municipality, as part of the Bio-div project. Faced with the decrease in the quantity of fish and especially their size revealed by the Criobe studies, the population and users of the lagoon, questioned on this subject, had largely approved of the rāhui as a means of preserving marine resources. The studies having revealed that the southern reef of Matira is an area richest in species of commercial fish and invertebrates such as pahua and vana, but also one of the most frequented. It is therefore this area that was chosen, after consultation with all the stakeholders concerned, brought together in a future management committee called “Tomite Po rāhui”.
