Our ongoing extinction crisis poses an existential threat to civilization, yet almost all biodiversity conservation strategies are underfunded. As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic exposes the fragile foundation of global conservation, the ability of current conservation strategies to prevent the accelerated loss of biodiversity has become even more precarious.
