A joint research project by the University of Queensland, James Cook University and University of Tasmania found that existing marine reserves need to be much larger to be effective against the overfishing of sharks species. The study, funded by the Shark Conservation Fund and published in the journal Current Biology, estimated that no-take reserves along coral reefs that extend between 10 and 50 kilometers may reverse the decline in the world’s coral reef shark populations caused by overfishing.
