Forests are important to Pacific Island people's lives as they contribute to food, water, and income security and hold significant cultural and social values for them. Deforestation due to human activity has been well-documented over the years; however, there is limited information available on the quantity of forest degraded due to plant invasive species.

Recently, the Pacific Community’s (SPC) Land Resources Division (LRD) and the Geoscience, Energy and Maritime (GEM) teams travelled to Nuku’alofa in Tonga to carry out technical training on mapping invasive plant species using open-source tools - QFIELD and QGIS for the Tongan Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forests (MAFF).
