Specimens of giant sensitive plant, an invasive plant pest, have just been observed for the first time in Nuku Hiva. Several islanders are concerned about the arrival of other plant pests in the Marquesas Islands if nothing is done to better control and track the arrival of goods and other materials from Tahiti.
Last July, the giant sensitive plant (Mimosa diplotricha var. diplotricha), an invasive plant pest, already present in Tahiti for several years, was detected for the first time on the island of Nuku Hiva by Nico Falchetto, a retired agent of the agricultural service, formerly the rural development service (SDR). The man had then spotted a large clump on the side of the road leading to the airport, at the Toovii pass.
