The word “landfill” conjures up an image of mountains of waste accompanied by foul smells and oozing liquids... “Landfill” sits close in my mind with words like “contamination” and “pollution.” However, this view marked my own ignorance of the potential of what landfills could be — until I made my way to the nation of Singapore. Singapore’s Semakau Landfill offers an example of how we can make room for biodiversity, even in places where we dump our trash.
