Port Vila, coral conservation

The Head of the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Division, Toney Tevi, said that the lack of proper town planning strategy contributes to coral reefs facing threats in the Port Vila harbor. “Many are questioning why authorities are focusing solely on the demolition of buildings while neglecting the impact on the city’s marine environment,” he said.

“The ongoing demolition of damaged buildings in Port Vila has raised significant concerns, as the debris, including chemical waste and septic leaks, risks being washed into the ocean with heavy rainfall. “This could lead to a major environmental disaster, as toxic substances from demolished structures could seep into the water and further destroy marine habitats.

“A critical issue contributing to the crisis is the lack of a proper town planning strategy that takes environmental conservation into account. “Proper regulations, stricter enforcement of waste disposal laws, and investment in sustainable infrastructure are necessary steps toward safeguarding the harbor.”
