The people of the Maskelyns, Southeast Malekula, are once again benefiting from the results of respecting to their own Community-Based management rules developed by the communities themselves. They have been prioritizing the management of their fishing grounds for decades, in collaboration with the Vanuatu Fisheries Department (VFD). Fishing rules around use of gears and access to areas were applied for a long time, however in 2017 the community collated them together and launched their first ever Community-based Fisheries Management (CBFM) plan.
