The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has pledged USD 65,000 (approximately PGK 235,520) annually for 2025 and 2026 to support the Arafura and Timor Seas Ecosystem Action (ATSEA) program.  This funding is part of Papua New Guinea’s commitment to the ATSEA Sydney Ministerial Declaration, signed yesterday by the Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Jelta Wong during a ceremony in Sydney, Australia.

The ATSEA Sydney Ministerial Declaration marks a significant step in regional efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Arafura and Timor Seas. Minister Wong emphasized the vital role of these ecosystems stating:  “The Arafura and Timor Seas ecosystem is central to the economic well-being and cultural heritage of our nations. It provides sustenance, employment, and opportunities for millions of people. It is our collective responsibility to manage these resources sustainably for generations to come.”
