“Coral reefs are not just ecosystems—they are lifelines for Pacific Island nations.”
This was the message from Dr Sivendra Michael, Fiji Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, as he opened the Pacific Coral Reef Partner Dialogue in Suva last week, which brought together regional and global partners to advance shared goals following the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in France.
“Coral reefs may cover less than 1 percent of the ocean floor, but they support around 25 percent of all marine life. In the Pacific, they are vital for food security, coastal protection, and economic resilience through tourism and fisheries,” Dr Michael said.
