Vanuatu, located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, leads by example for managing marine resources in a way that doesn't harm the environment. Vanuatu is a nation where the ocean is significantly larger than the land, comprising 98% of the country's territory. Proud of its rich and diverse marine ecosystems, Vanuatu includes unique coral reef ecosystems, mangroves, seagrass meadows, seamounts, and deep-sea trenches.
These natural resources provide a habitat for various marine life and play a crucial role in supporting local livelihoods and preserving cultural traditions. Recognising the immense value of its marine environment, Vanuatu has developed a comprehensive National Ocean Policy (NOP) and Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) that promotes sustainable practices while integrating traditional knowledge and community engagement.
The launch of Vanuatu's newly revised NOP and MSP in 2024 demonstrated the country's strengthened commitment to ocean protection. The two documents prioritised ocean conservation while valuing and incorporating traditional local knowledge. Their goal was to establish a solid framework for ocean governance, promoting better collaboration among government departments, ministries, marine resource users, and local communities.
