Sonsorol state has become the 16th state to join the Protected Areas Network (PAN). Their nominated site, Merir Protected Area, has rich a rich ecosystem that supports a variety of habitats that includes diverse mariner and terrestrial organisms such as birds, green turtles, coconut crabs, fish, and other marine species. The Merir Island is a critical area to include into the Network of Protected Areas in Palau as it bears the largest nesting site for melob (green sea turtles).
