A strip of land on a small island at the state's westernmost point might be only 1 kilometre long, but it has highlighted the delicate politics between government, the resources industry and native title holders...Dirk Hartog Island, off the Shark Bay coastline, is both a national park and tourism destination, but its main claim to fame is being home to ‘Return to 1616’, a globally significant rehabilitation project aiming to restore the land to how it was before the arrival of the Dutch explorer for which it's named.
