Tropical forests are converted at an alarming rate through deforestation. A new study, published in Science, shows that regrowing tropical forests recover surprisingly fast on abandoned land. After 20 years, they can attain on average nearly 80% of the soil fertility, soil carbon storage, structure, and tree diversity of old-growth forests.
