The 2025 Honiara Summit held in the Solomon Islands concluded Thursday, and the Pacific leaders vowed to prioritize fisheries in conversations about ocean conservation and sustainable development in the region.

Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr was one of the Pacific leaders who attended the meeting and recognized the importance of partnership between regional and international the importance of partnering to implement SDG Target 14.4 “to achieve the shared objective of maintaining global, regional and national fish stocks at sustainable levels. “

SDG Target 14.4 aims at the management of fishing effectively and combat overfishing and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as well as harmful fishing practices.
