SPREP plays a central role in advancing protected area management across the Pacific by supporting
Member countries and territories to strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
Through its mandate to promote regional cooperation and environmental protection, SPREP provides
technical assistance, policy guidance, and capacity support for the effective implementation of
protected area commitments under global and regional frameworks.

As the Secretariat of the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation, SPREP leads and
coordinates the implementation of the Regional Framework for Nature Conservation and Protected
Areas, working closely with partners to ensure national and regional priorities are addressed.

  • Through its Protected Areas Programme, SPREP supports countries in key areas including:
  • Capacity building for protected area practitioners and institutions;
  • Data management and technical support for national reporting to platforms such as the World
    Database on Protected Areas;
  • Stakeholder coordination and engagement, ensuring inclusive conservation planning;
  • Information sharing and knowledge exchange across the region; and
  • Support for the review and alignment of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans
    (NBSAPs) with global targets, particularly Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global
    Biodiversity Framework.
  • This work helps ensure that protected areas across the Pacific are effectively managed,
    equitably governed, and contribute meaningfully to national and regional conservation goals.
