Three out of four turtle populations risk cadmium contamination

In collaboration with Utrecht University (Netherlands), Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany) and the University of Queensland, the researchers developed a virtual turtle model to simulate cadmium uptake and its effects over a turtles' lifetime.

Atrazine to be banned in Hawai‘i

Human-derived mercury shown to pollute the world's deepest ocean trenches

Scientists have found that man-made mercury pollution has reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean—the Marianas Trench. This has significant implications for how mercury affects the marine environment, and how it may be concentrated in the food chain.

New Zealand threatens to sue Rio Tinto after floods threatened toxic waste

New Zealand’s environment minister has threatened the mining conglomerate Rio Tinto with legal action over what he says is an “outrageous” failure to deal with toxic waste from an aluminium plant.

Harmful levels of long-banned chemicals, including the pesticide DDT, have been found in the tissues of two vulnerable dolphin species swimming in waters flowing into the Great Barrier Reef.
