Sea turtles swim easier as poaching declines

An estimated 1.1 million sea turtles were illegally harvested from 1990 to 2020 — but today poaching poses less of a threat to these endangered reptiles. Poaching is less of a threat to the survival of sea turtles than it once was, a new analysis suggests.

Chinese poachers barred from returning to Palau

Two weeks following their release, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has issued a statement that the 28 Chinese poachers apprehended at Helen Reef last month are barred from returning to Palau, and will face prosecution if they attempt to repeat the crime.

High tech cameras on Kāpiti Island catching 300 percent more poachers

A programme to install webcams on Kāpiti Island is being expanded in an effort to clamp down on illegal poachers. The first webcam was installed at the end of 2018 and another last year. The group behind them, Guardians of the Kāpiti Marine Reserve, say they are already having an impact.
