This session will highlight achievements and challenges for different mechanisms for financing conservation action in the region and will showcase come financing mechanisms being used. We will share examples taking into account important dimensions that influence such financing such as: 1. bridging the investment need (how much financing is needed to meet targets on reducing biodiversity loss and damage to nature?) 2.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) are focused on identifying innovative ways to effectively protect and restore critical ecosystems, such as coral reefs, in Asia and the Pacific. The need for funding and capacity to protect and restore coral reefs is too great to fill from any one source. The solution will require creative thinking and need to be multifaceted and diverse. The urgency of the crisis is too great to not invest now in identifying and developing innovative financial tools.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework envisages an increasing reliance on large-scale private finance to fund biodiversity targets. We warn that this may pose contradictions in delivering conservation outcomes and propose a critical ongoing role for direct public funding of conservation and public oversight of private nature-related financial mechanisms.

Ocean threats: acidification, deoxygenation, warming, heatwaves. Do we have anything useful to bend, change, or reverse the results? This brochure, conceived to advocate and educate at the UNFCCC COP27 meetings, summarises these threats and how various solutions (explained within) can actually help protect the ocean as Nature-based Solutions, if correctly constructed, and the existing and emerging financial mechanisms and institutions that can build and fortify these solutions.
