This session will explore the management and application of water quality parameters in the case of New Caledonia and Fiji outlining the difficulties, successes and practical application to other similar situations around the Pacific. It will explore widely how and what a freshwater health index can be applied to the Pacific Islands its suitability and sustainability.

It's easy to think that more nutrients—the stuff life needs to grow and thrive—would foster more vibrant ecosystems. Yet nutrient pollution has in fact wrought havoc on marine systems, contributing to harmful algae blooms, worse water quality and oxygen-poor dead zones.

An analysis of Kiribati’s legislation to determine gaps, overlaps and conflicts. This analysis involves –

* An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of existing legislation and proposed laws (Bills)

* An assessment of the effectiveness of the legislation in supporting the government to responsibly manage the environment and ensure the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources
