Raymundo, L.J., Couch, C.S., and Harvell, C.D. 2008. Coral Reef Targeted Research and Capacity Building for Management Program, c/- Centre for Marine Studies, Gerhmann Building, The University of Queensland, St Lucia, Australia.
The Coral Reef Targeted Research & Capacity Building for Management (CRTR) Program developed this 120-page handbook, an extremely detailed and thorough guide for reef managers to identify and quantify the impact of coral disease. It outlines procedures for describing indicators, measuring impacts, monitoring outbreaks, assessing causes and managing reefs to minimize losses due to disease.
The handbook contains useful photos for identification of disease as well as a decision-tree for Indo-Pacific Coral Health. There are data sheet templates in the appendices along with a table of the major diseases of the Indo-Pacific as detailed in literature.
This handbook is a technical document that requires significant expertise to carry out the procedures. The Coral Disease and Health Consortium (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also has a decision tree and ID guides to assist in the identification of coral disease.
