Land degradation and the loss of biological diversity are two of the most pressing environmental threats facing humanity. Both are eroding the planetary life support systems on which the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations depend. Action to address these crises, as well as the gathering climate emergency, has so far been inadequate and transformative change on all continents and at all scales is needed in order to ward off the most serious risks to our economies, societies and the natural world. The international community has an opportunity to better reflect the synergies between LDN and biodiversity conservation in the ongoing process of developing the post-2020 biodiversity framework. Countries will also be able to step up joint action on both agendas in the context of the 2021-2030 UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
