The call for applications for the 2026 session is now open (also available in FrenchPDF and SpanishPDF). The deadline for applications to be received by DOALOS is 14 September 2025. Award results will be posted on our website under the News Section in December 2025.

The objective of the United Nations-The Nippon Foundation Fellowship on Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea is to provide mid-level government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing States working directly in ocean affairs and/or the law of the sea with funded advanced training opportunities in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, or related disciplines, including marine science in support of governance frameworks.

The objective is for participants to acquire the skills needed to assist their States in implementing the legal framework set out in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and related instruments, as well as in formulating comprehensive ocean governance regimes, including in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
