Our understanding of the biodiversity on Earth is unbalanced and biased towards certain species within the Tree of Life, according to a new study. The research, published as a Reviewed Preprint in eLife, provides what the editors call a compelling analysis that details the links between societal and academic interest and natural species across the globe. In their analysis, the authors reveal biases that could be diminishing our abilities to care for the species on our planet that might need our attention the most.
