IOTC adopts closure period for drifting FADs, over EU opposition

At a contentious special session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), developing nations bucked pressure from the European Union and approved an annual closure period for drifting fish-aggregating devices (dFADs).

Whale in distress rescued by local fisherman and fisheries crew

A sub-adult humpback whale was reported to be in dire need of help after local fisherman BJ Rex spotted the whale while out at sea just off the coast of Tuapa village last Thursday morning.

Malaitan community benefits from local government FAD program

Malaitan communities have already benefited from the provincial government’s initiative to provide coastal communities with fish-aggregating devices (FADs). The initiative was launched in May 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
