Objectives of consultancy services - the objectives of this contract are to 1) assess the efficacy of existing LSMPA finance strategies, 2) develop recommendations to improve existing LSMPA finance, and 3) develop guidance for new LSMPA finance strategies. 

The December-January shutdown heavily impacted US federal MPAs. These include National Marine Sanctuaries and Marine National Monuments, among other sites, and are some of the largest MPAs in the world, like the 1.5-million km2 Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

The Pacific Blue Belt Project successfully completed its final activities in November 2018. These activities included implementing ten coral fragmentation restoration structures and providing training for four underwater educational trails in French Polynesia. 

The Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Jan. 6, 2019. The protected area safeguards vibrant coral reefs and deep-sea ecosystems teeming with life, and provides a safe haven for threatened species of sharks, seabirds, turtles, and marine mammals.

Our region also has a total of 346 marine protected areas.

Mission Blue last month conducted a Hope Spot expedition to Palau, where expedition members met with President Thomas Remengesau Jr. and talked about his efforts to establish a marine protected area in 80 percent of the waters around the South Pacific island nation.
