Dave Butler was a quiet achiever who had an extraordinary love for natural history and the environment. After a battle with prostate cancer, Butler passed away at his home in Nelson on December 20 at the age of 67. For a quarter of a century he was the driving force behind the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, the largest wildlife sanctuary in the South Island...As well as his work in New Zealand, Butler was also a regular visitor to the Pacific Islands in his role as a conservation consultant.
